"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC (plays during "The Road So Far" recap of events)
Before I go into the episode, I have to remark on this opening with Thunderstruck - this opening made such an impression on me - such an awesome song and just a perfect beginning for the new and very last season of Kripke's original story line.
The episode itself starts with the end of the last episode. Dean and Sam grabbing eachother as the pit opens up. Sam finally wakes from his hypnotic state and they both run for the doors, but the doors slam shut and they are locked in - no way out. We see the doors from the other side as the light starts shining through the cracks, and then back to Sam and Dean as they just look in horror at the light filling the room and plug their ears to the angel speech. I've got to wonder what Lucifer is saying... Do you think he is trying to talk to Sam like Cas tried to talk to Dean? Dean and Sam are trying to protect themselves with their hands and shield their eyes and when they open them again, they are in an airplane far above the convent. And we hear this cartoon voice of the Devil going, "What the devil is your name?" in an episode of Yosemite Sam which is hilarious not only because it may have been the sort of conversation they might have had with Lucifer if they had not been snatched up but also the guys name just happens to be Sam. And I wonder as I did in the previous episode if Sam had been on his own - if Dean hadn't come at the end there, would Sam have said yes to Lucifer right there and then...? All might have been lost.
Dean is looking out the window in horror as the light from within the convent goes straight up into the dark night sky and the pilots try to control their plane so they do not crash.
Once off the plane, Sam and Dean find a car and are driving in silence as Sam sifts through the radio stations all of which are talking of various happenings associated with the end of the world. Hurricanes, swine flue, nuclear testing in Korea, earthquakes... Sam tries to talk about what happened back at the convent because he feels so bad but Dean is like, don't worry, we'll figure it all out. Dean's heart is in turmoil. The fact that Sam had chosen Ruby over him has not been resolved, and now that it has lead to the worst end possible, he just can't forgive him completely and move on. So here, he stops Sam from saying anything that would require that he think about it too much and tries to put all the personal stuff aside to deal with it as a case. He decides they need to go find Cas - so they go to Chuck's house. When they get there, it looks like a hurricane went right through it. Sam goes by himself into the next room to check it out and gets bonked by Chuck. One of a few funny scenes in this ep...
But Chuck reminds us that Sam's eyes had turned black as he killed Lilith and gives us some additional info about his body temperature rising and how Chuck had been pretty sure Sam wasn't going to get out of this alive. Dean reacts to the black eyes a bit. "Your eyes turned black?" and we feel the sickening of Dean's heart here and Sam's as well as Sam quietly answers, "I didn't know." They ask about Cas and Chuck tells them how he had exploded (and I remember Cas exploding at the end of the season too... huh...) and freaks a little as Sam helps him find a molar in his hair.
DEAN:Cas, you stupid bastard.
SAM: Stupid? He was trying to help us.
Here again is possible indication of the turmoil within Dean. He is maybe feeling that he was stupid to even try to stop Sam - that he had recruited Cas for a lost cause. Remember how he told Cas that stopping Sam was worth dying for? But Dean was not able to stop Sam and Cas was dead anyway.
I don't quite know when Dean made the sigil on the wall, but we are missing some minutes because he's already made it when Zach comes in and tells him he is needed to stop Lucifer. Zach is still trying to hide from Dean that he is Michael's vessel but he is willing to mention that Lucifer is looking for HIS vessel...
ZACHARIAH:Lucifer is powerful in ways that defy description. We need to strike now, hard and fast—before he finds his vessel.
SAM:His vessel? Lucifer needs a meat suit?
ZACHARIAH:He is an angel. Them's the rules.
(Only we as rewatchers know who that vessel is.)
Just as Zach is arguing with Dean, he notices the blood dripping from Dean's clenched fist for the best scene ever.
DEAN:Learned that from my friend Cas, you son of a bitch.
I'm pretty sure that this is the first time Dean calls Cas "my friend" but I guess he's earned it by dying for their "lost" cause.
So they have a few hours to regroup and Sam and Dean move to an out-of-the-way motel (but let Chuck know where they are? or maybe he saw that in a vision too...) and Sam makes them some hex bags to keep the demons and angels away. There is a bit of awkwardness as he explains that he learned how to make them from Ruby and Dean asks if Sam still craves the blood, but Sam tells him he doesn't. That whoever put him on the plane must have cleaned him up. Interesting to remember Sam at the beginning of Season 3, telling Dean and Ruby that he wasn't having visions anymore after Azazel died. And also remember that Sam will be craving some blood in a future episode which means that the effect of the demon blood is still there - just dormant. I then start wondering about those withdrawal symptoms he had in WTLB... Ruby said he had had it in him the whole time, that she had not poisoned him with the blood... You could say that his withdrawal symptoms were self-induced or possibly induced by the blood that was already inside of him so that he would feel the need to drink the blood and kill Lilith.
Being reminded of how they got out, Sam again tries to apologize to Dean and Dean again stops him. But it's obvious there are a bunch of feelings behind him stopping Sam.
DEAN:It's okay. You don't have to say anything.
SAM:Well, that's good. Because what can I even say? "I'm sorry"? "I screwed up"? Doesn't really do it justice, you know? Look, there's nothing I can do or say that will ever make this right—
DEAN:So why do you keep bringing it up?!
Dean starts to lose it, pulls himself back together and again putting the personal stuff aside...
DEAN:Look, all I'm saying is, why do we have to put this under a microscope? We made a mess. We clean it up. That's it.
DEAN:All right, so, say this is just any other hunt. You know? What do we do first?
SAM:We'd, uh, figure out where the thing is.
This conversation reminds me a lot of Home. It calms them down, this hunting talk. It calms Dean down, and it calms Sam down.
Of course the craziness of the situation shakes them a bit just like back then. Back then it was just a demon - this time it's the devil himself.
In another part of country, Lucifer has put his eye on Nick.
SARAH:It's you, Nick. You're special. You're chosen.
It seems that Nick is one of those people who can be a vessel for an angel and he also seems to have the perfect background for Lucifer's manipulations. His wife and child were murdered in cold blood - probably pretty recently - and he has a lot of resentment toward God. As first time viewers, it's possible to think that Nick is the true vessel of Lucifer and by saying yes to Lucifer, he just signed a death sentence for the rest of the world. In actuality, we know that Lucifer really needs Sam.
In yet another part of the country, Chuck has called Becky and told her the truth.
I personally do not dislike Becky. She provides some comic relief to the episode(s) and Sam's reactions to her are just great to watch. But from some reactions to TMATEOTB, I am guessing there are similar reactions to Becky as well.
Love her handlename - Samlicker81. We have another jab at "slash fans" with Becky writing fanfiction and in particular a rather hot scene between Sam and Dean (made all the more funny by how she reacts to Dean in the next scene).
BECKY:You need my help?
CHUCK:That's right. I need you to get a message to Sam and Dean. Okay?
BECKY:Look, Mr. Edlund... Yes, I'm a fan, but I really don't appreciate being mocked. I know that Supernatural's just a book, okay? I know the difference between fantasy and reality.
CHUCK:Becky, it's all real.
BECKY:I knew it!
And we have that doorway scene which I love so much because of Sam being so uncomfortable with it. He is so darn cute.
BECKY:No. But I know you. You're Sam Winchester. And you're—
BECKY:—not what I pictured. I'm Becky.
But she finally tells them her message from Chuck, which is actually a vision sent by the angels on purpose, to lure Dean to a place where they can get a hold of him. (Since he is hidden by the hex bag) The angels have made up a little puzzle for Dean, but one that they know that he will be able to remember/find in his father's diary.
Sam and Dean have called Bobby and he arrives with the impala. It would be logical to assume that Bobby is possessed already at this point, but the demon is pretty good at playing Bobby. He hugs both boys －
DEAN:You weren't followed, were you?
BOBBY:You mean by angels, demons, or Sam's new superfan?
So while they are looking through all the lore and Bible references etc. to try to find the Michael sword, Sam can't take it anymore and tells Bobby what had happened at the convent despite a protest by Dean- that Lilith had not broken the final seal, that Lilith had been the final seal - and Demon!Bobby goes ballistic. One of the most painful scenes in the whole episode. Interesting though that Dean only protests once, and lets Sam say what he wanted to say. I have the funny feeling that maybe he wanted to see Bobby say what he did. I think from the way he is feeling he thinks that it would be normal to feel that way. But we know from Bobby's speech later on and in Lucifer Rising that that is not how he feels at all. If anything, Bobby wants to show Sam that "he wouldn't push him away like (Bobby believed) his real father had." Dean's face, as Demon!Bobby spews those awful words, is resigned.
BOBBY:You're damn right you didn't listen. You were reckless and selfish and arrogant.
BOBBY:Oh, yeah? You're sorry you started Armageddon? This kind of thing don't get forgiven, boy. If, by some miracle, we pull this off...I want you to lose my number. You understand me?
But Sam maybe had been expecting this too. He is also resigned. Maybe, in a way, he needs this outlash from Bobby. He needs someone to get angry because he deserves it. Sam goes out to do some research at the church nearby and leaves Dean and Demon!Bobby together.
When Demon!Bobby talks of how John may have been right about Sam - that they should have killed him before he did what he did - Dean makes a small protest. He doesn't really say Bobby is right or wrong. But mention of his dad reminds him of the memo in dad's journal. Once he tells Demon!Bobby about it, Demon!Bobby shows his true self and takes a big swig at Dean, knocking him across the room.
Meg and another demon barge in, and we have a demony kiss scene before Meg tells Dean that she wants Bobby to feel himself kill Dean.
Dean immediately implores Bobby to stop this from happening and as with his dad and the YED, and later on - Sam and Lucifer and Cas with his programming, Bobby is able to overcome the demon inside him through his love for Dean and stabs himself in the gut with the demon blade.[Season 10 Spoiler (click to open)](That is the only thing I can think of that would also help Dean overcome his MoC in Season 10)Sam comes back just in time to help - interesting that here Sam is able to recognize Meg right away... maybe because of being possessed by her? And Dean is able to get to the demon blade from Bobby's body to the other demon and looks at Meg, scaring Meg enough that she flees.
Nick is having hallucinations...
Sam and Dean have rushed Bobby to the hospital, but need to leave right away in order to get to the storage facility before the demons. We have a real cool scene with Dean twirling his gun here - I remembered this scene but couldn't remember which episode it was!
When they go into the facility, they find the demons on the floor - killed probably by the booby traps made by dad and not by the angels. Zach and sidekicks appear as Dean and Sam go inside and they drop the bomb.
ZACHARIAH:It's you, chucklehead. You're the Michael sword.
ZACHARIAH:You're the vessel. Michael's vessel.
DEAN:How? Why—why me?
ZACHARIAH:Because you're chosen! It's a great honor, Dean.
DEAN:Oh, yeah. Yeah, life as an angel condom. That's real fun. I think I'll pass, thanks.
ZACHARIAH:Joking. Always joking. Well...no more jokes.
(Interesting how both Lucifer and the angels talk about the vessels how they are "special" and "chosen.")
Zach turns to Sam and breaks his leg, then he gives Dean stomach cancer and and then takes away Sam's lungs (I don't know how Sam held on for so long without them...)
ZACHARIAH:Are we having fun yet? You're going to say yes, Dean.
DEAN:Just kill us.
and tells Dean he's not going to kill him, he's just getting started with the torture.
But why does Dean refuse here aye? Why does he take death - his own AND his brother's - when later, he would say yes to save him and Adam? Because of his feeling of disillusionment with his brother? His own inability to stop his brother from freeing Lucifer? Maybe I will understand this better later.
Cas appears just as things are about to get very ugly and Zach, worried that the wrath of God would come down on him, decides to do what Cas says and fix the boys and flee.
CASTIEL:You two need to be more careful.
DEAN:Yeah, I'm starting to get that. Your frat brothers are bigger dicks than I thought.
CASTIEL:I don't mean the angels. Lucifer is circling his vessel. And once he takes it, those hex bags won't be enough to protect you.
Now, this talk by Cas about Lucifer circling his vessel... Does Cas know it is Sam? or does he just think it is Nick? He is definitely circling Nick... does Cas sense this? or does Cas mean that once Lucifer is free to wander, he will be looking for Sam? But I love the idea of the sigil being carved on their ribs! Also interesting that Dean asks how Cas is back and Cas vanishes without answering the question. I'm wondering why he does not say what he thinks to Dean... maybe he thinks Dean should know?
Back to Nick - he finally gives in and says yes so that he can get the "next best thing" to getting his wife and child back. Revenge against God... which really doesn't make sense if you think about it.
LUCIFER:There are only two rational answers, Nick—either he's sadistic, or he simply doesn't care. You're angry. You have every right to be angry. I am angry, too. That's why I want to find him—hold him accountable for his actions. Just because he created us doesn't mean he can toy with us, like playthings.
(Anger is key here, as we have seen through the previous episodes. )
Back to the boys. They've found their way back to Bobby, who is understandably a bit grumpy upon being told by the doctor that he probably will never walk again. Dean is all positivity. He tells Bobby, don't listen to that doctor, and when Bobby and Sam talk about how it's going to be all downhill from there, trying to save as many people as possible for as long as possible, Dean suggests that they can win. That he will figure it out somehow.
DEAN:What if we win?
DEAN:I'm serious. I mean, screw the angels and the demons and their crap apocalypse. Hell, they want to fight a war, they can find their own planet. This one's ours, and I say they get the hell off it. We take 'em all on. We kill the devil. Hell, we even kill Michael if we have to. But we do it our own damn selves.
BOBBY:And how are we supposed to do all this, genius?
It totally cheers Bobby up and we see him smile, tell Dean he's nine kinds of crazy and we also see Sam smiling with a bit of hope. As Sam and Dean are walking out the door, Bobby stops Sam and tells him that he didn't mean what the demon said to Sam back at the motel.
Which makes Sam so thankful and happy. But I have to say Dean doesn't really look happy to hear it. He doesn't smile - he just watches them with no emotion like he's trying to hold something in. And when they get outside and Sam starts talking excitedly about Dean's "plan" to kill Lucifer... how about getting the colt?... Dean cuts him off impatiently saying that he had said all that just to make Bobby feel better. He wasn't optimistic at all about their situation.
DEAN:I just said a bunch of crap for Bobby's benefit.
I mean, I'll fight. I'll fight till the last man, but let's at least be honest. I mean, we don't stand a snowball's chance, and you know that. I mean, hell, you of all people know that.
And so now we know why he didn't care that the angels killed them both. He'd seen "destiny" in action in Sam. He'd seen Sam leave him for a demon and release Lucifer from hell. If they couldn't stop it then, how were they going to stop it now? When Lucifer was free too?
SAM:Is there something you want to say to me?
DEAN:I tried, Sammy. I mean, I really tried. But I just can't keep pretending that everything's all right. Because it's not. And it's never going to be. You chose a demon over your own brother—
DEAN:—and look what happened.
SAM:I would give anything—anything—to take it all back.
DEAN:I know you would. And I know how sorry you are. I do. But, man...
DEAN:I'm just—I'm having a hard time forgiving and forgetting here. You know?
DEAN:I just don't...I don't think that we can ever be what we were. You know?
And I guess Sam knew from the beginning that Dean was holding these feelings inside - like he was when Dad died - and he was just waiting for Dean to tell him. He needed to hear them from Dean, and Dean needed to say them. But boy do they hurt. It reminds me a bit of Season 9 even though the reasons are so different. Sam though will stay steadfast to the end, maybe because of his mistake, maybe because of Dean's disappointment in him, and will show his brother his love and faith in him and what he had said in that hospital room. He will be the one pulling Dean along to show him that they can do it together.
