Hello and welcome!

This is a blog dedicated to the rewatch of Supernatural episodes. There will be vague spoilers on recent episodes in relation to the past episodes so please keep that in mind.

I have a separate blog for creations such as icons, Season 9 and counting comments (brief?), fanvids and daily activities in Japan. Feel free to check it out in the link section (Supernut's Chat Room). I am also open to icon/banner requests if you like my particular style.

* If you would like me to friend you, please sent me a message. If you do not and friend me, I will assume you want it to be one-sided(You are free to do this - my blog is open for now).

As we enter Season 2, and in anticipation of many more seasons, I have decided to put the links to all episode comments up front for whoever would like to view previous rewatch comments.

Comments and poll participation are welcome at anytime. If you have just recently decided to rewatch Season 1 again, I would love to share that experience with you. At the end is also a link to the final poll in which you are also welcome to participate!

This took a veeeery long time for various reasons but I'm proud of myself just for doing a little bit at a time and actually finishing it. It is also veeeery long so, thank you to everyone who takes the time to read it!

I rewatched this ep way too many times when it first aired. I say too many because I actually got a bit sick of it by the time I was done. I overdo things sometimes, which is one of the reasons why I decided to do the kind of rewatch where I watch all the eps so I don’t get sick of one favorite episode by watching it too much. I still remember the excitement I felt that day though, as I watched it and discussed it with friends over at supernatural.TV forums.

I’m not quite sure what it was about the ep that I loved so much at that time, but can tell you one thing for sure. The LARP setting of King Arthur/Robin Hood type fantasy is really my kind of thing. I don’t know if I could pretend so thoroughly in real life, and actually participate in such an event, but I love the period, and I’ve always imagined myself and characters in the period with fascination and romanticism, sort of like I’ve felt for the Wild West - just like Dean in fact. THIS is Dean’s world, truly. A world in which he can be “of” the period without really being there, enjoy all the romanticised, fantastic notions without the reality. And Dean dressed up in middle ages costume was and is still one of the special aspects of the ep.

I also really appreciate Sam and Dean doing something fun together. It’s not often we see this, but they really needed it after what they both went through, and the looks Dean gives Sam remind me so much of Season 1!

Another reason why I’ve always liked this ep is that this is where Charlie realizes that she had been hiding in her dreamworld after the shocking and stressful events of Season 7. Dean assures her that she is a hero in real life, and she proves it by getting rid of the villain herself. She also decides that she is going to live in the real world from now on despite the fact that the real world had real monsters she had to face. This is also the reason why I was so disappointed in the next Charlie episode. But I’ll discuss that more when we get there. What I do want to think about more this time around is the parallels between Charlie and Sam in their reasons for hiding in their dreamworlds as well as a general theme of the ep, that dreamworlds are necessary sometimes, as a coping mechanism and relief from the stresses/griefs of real life.

I called this ep light and frivolous in the poll comments, and this was because the plot itself seemed weak and to rely heavily on the “fun” aspects - so that once the initial excitement wore off, the story itself wasn’t as entertaining to watch. But, sometimes frivolity is necessary. All the funny lines put me at ease and made me happy and boy did I need to have some fun too after all the angst and pain of the previous eps - Dean’s pain, Sam’s pain, and the pain of all the fans divided :( It was truly a hard first half of a season.

I sense there is also a hidden theme within this ep that is only seen through this kind of careful (re)watch. An emphasis on the difference between a game and real life, how fantasy can be used as an escape, but also the danger of confusing it with real life. This theme is actually carried over from Hunteri Herorici and we can maybe see some parallels to Sam’s situation in that sense as well.

Wohoo! Finally DONE!! skip

This ep seems to focus on the issue of “doing the right thing. ” Looking back, Dean was trying to do the right thing when he killed Dick and sent himself to Purgatory. Cas was trying to do the right thing by paying for his crimes in Purgatory. Sam was trying to do the right thing by letting go when Dean was “dead.”

In Season 8, we see Benny trying to do the right thing by abstaining from blood and going back to his roots/family, Sam trying to do the right thing by leaving Amelia when Don came back (Don was also trying to do the right thing when he went to war) as well as by helping Dean find Kevin, Cas is still trying to do the right thing in order to pay for his crimes, Dean is trying to do the right thing by helping his friend Benny stay clean and saving the world, and Kevin is trying to do the right thing by helping the Winchesters. What we find out this ep, maybe, is that there may be many things that could be the right thing, but whatever you decide, your heart has to be in it completely.

This ep, Sam, Dean and Kevin all let go of something in order to put their whole heart into what they have chosen. This is not the main plot. The main story is about Cas, Samandriel and the angels and the reveals regarding angel programming and Cas’ programming as well as the angel tablet. I’ll have to say though that the Sam/Dean issues and scenes at the beginning and end are what make this ep special for me.

Let’s start.

There are parts of this ep that are very hard to watch for me, and if anyone remembers from previous eps, you’d know that these would be angry Sam scenes. They killed me in Southern Comfort, and they break my heart again this ep. But the best of eps break you right? So much emotion. Yes, angry, uncomfortable emotion, but so well done by Jared that I had to rate this as awesome even though it makes me cringe. That’s not the only reason. I love Benny. I love how he loves his granddaughter, I love the scenes between him and Dean, and how he comes back for family and even how he killed Martin and left him bleeding on the floor. Oh do I hate Martin this ep, even knowing that he is sick and just doesn’t believe in the concept of “gray” as we know many hunters do not. He is worse than Gordon to me in this ep, but he is another example of how humans can become more of a monster than any supernatural monster. Kudos to the actor for the awesome acting.

There are several things I want to focus on this ep. First of all Sam’s feelings with regard to his dream world. We can see this not only in his flashbacks, but also in the similarities between Benny and Sam’s situation.

Just as Sam clings to his illusion of normal life, so does Benny: Sam attaches himself to Amelia so they can be “messes together” and Benny attaches himself to his granddaughter so he can be accountable to someone and not go off the deepend. They are both faced with reality, Sam when Don (and Dean) come back, and Benny when a vampire from his past comes back to lure him back into the life. And yet, they still try to cling to their lives with these people they love until finally circumstances force their decision to leave. But when they do leave, they end up going back when “their loved ones are in danger.” Amelia was not really in danger, but she could have been, and both Benny and Sam dropped everything to go rescue the person they loved.

Secondly is Benny’s strong resolve not to drink (live) blood. Casey mentioned to me previously how the original plan was for Benny to stumble sometime during Season 8. Whether relevant or not, (since there was never any indication that it did happen) there is a warning about it this ep. Benny loses the last person he could have been kept accountable to here and it will become increasingly difficult for him to hang on.

The ep itself, however, is very clearly about Benny winning one big battle against his natural craving as a vampire in the never-ending war that he chose to fight. The thing about monsters that we often forget, is that they are not really doing anything evil by killing humans. Just like humans are not doing anything evil by killing animals to eat. That’s how we/they evolved and survived. The special thing about Benny is that he is different from other vampires in that he grew to love human beings so much that he chose to fight his natural inclination. This ep shows just how strong his resolve is and how it is not who you are but what you do that really matters.

There is not much of a focus on Dean except being caught in the middle between Sam and Benny, sort of like Amelia is caught in the middle between Don and Sam - but only because Sam sees it this way. Benny doesn’t think of it that way, and we know Dean, of course, would choose Sam over everyone. Sacrifice everyone for him.

Finally, there is of course Martin and the theme of humans being more of a monster than monsters themselves.

OK, let’s get started.

There was a lot of good stuff here. I’ve always remembered this ep as one that showed how Sam was in his own little dream world - both when Dean was gone and now. In that sense it was very special to me - to finally be able to understand a bit of how Sam was feeling and the reason why he ran. But I also LOVE the Cas scenes in this ep, and how hard it is for him to understand American cartoons as well as him also realizing how he was running from dealing with his problems. Unfortunately, Naomi stops him from coming back to Heaven and deletes his memory so it means nothing, but I still like the parallel between Cas and Sam.
